10.27.14: News: William Barker interview and gallery on Marguerite Avenue: SCHWA

Exciting news! I have an interview on my web magazine "Marguerite Avenue", featuring William Barker -- creator of "Schwa". Also featured -- a gallery of his work. Just posted. Check it out.

This was a fun interview to do, because Bills work completely influenced me.  Schwa came out of the 1990s and the 'zine' movement -- it was at the top of the best series of work that came out then.

Cryptic, funny, sometimes menacing -- after a long hiatus, I'm glad that Bill is working on Schwa again.

Here is a link to WB on Facebook. And his online store.

CM Evans Cartoons in Litro Magazine issue #109

Today I see I made the cut (and part of the cover!) for Litro Magazine's issue #109: The Comics and Graphic Fiction Edition. Litro is a monthly online/ print literary publication in the UK -- 100,000 copies are distributed around London and the UK, including in underground stations, libraries, galleries, bars and cafes. I've been a fan of Litro for some time, so to get included in an edition is a super bonus for me. Litro Magazine can be found here. Have a great day, enjoy! CM Evans Cartoons

CM Evans Cartoons - More Posts to Follow

Hello there, I was out of town and sometimes it feels like my scanner is connected to my computer by a cable that stretches to Mars and back -- so pardon the lack of updates. I know I'd go completely fucking bonkers if I had to look at "Tootsie Eggs", since July 14. I have many cartoons, and now that I'm back in front of my computer, look for updates again on a regular basis. Mom, Dad, Kettleman City, Wasco, Pozo, Napa, San Jose, 6 AM, Interstate 5, and the Moon over Fields in the Imperial Valley all send their regards. CM Evans Cartoons

Comic News - Bella is Out of the Daily Grind Iron Man Challenge

I missed it, but I was sad to see Bella Whigimill of YOUNG ADVENTURE FRIENDS was eliminated from the Daily Grind Iron Man Challenge on May 15. I was seriously rooting for him to be the winner. He does some great, bizarre conceptual cartooning that I can't completely comprehend, yet I am compelled to keep reading. He has truly created an alternate universe. Bella continues to update his webcomic, though, which is a good thing. Joseph Bergin III of Say Uncle was knocked out on May 28th. Another steady, dedicated cartoonist, cranking away and doing creative work. 11 artists are left. Who will go next?

News - Naif al-Mutawa & the 99 New Superheros

I read an interesting article in the Washington Post online today, about a comic creator named Naif al-Mutawa who has gone to the Koran for inspiration for his series of comic books -- The 99.

From the Washington Post: "I wanted to create something that would be a classic, not another made-in-the-fifth-world product," said Mutawa, 37, who has four sons. "It was either going to be Spiderman or nothing."

With the recent controversies of Mohammad cartoons, it is interesting to see this project, and hear Mr. Mutawa talk about what his motivations are in doing this work.

News - Apexart Cartoon Show is Up & Running!

We did the opening of the apexart/ Dave Egger's curated cartoon show "Lots of Things Like This" on April 2nd, and it was a smash hit. Almost too much of a good thing -- from the start we had a line of about 50 people going down the block. Rumor is, even David Byrne couldn't get in! If that is true, that's too bad, I would have loved to meet him. The space is a small venue, so we could only hold about 100 people at a time, otherwise we'd have all been crushed to death, and that wouldn't have been fun at all, would it? Part of the frustration stems from (in my opinion) a pent-up demand for installations like this -- funny, satirical, immediate work without a ton of commentary. You go to the space, and it is what it is. I hope people who didn't get in on opening night go back and see the show, it will be up for about a month. apexart does great things for the community and artists, and they definitely deserve the ongoing recognition -- they put their heart and soul into this exhibit. So if you're going to be in NYC or you are already there, go check it out!

News - Apexart Cartoon Show

The artists invited to the April NYC apexart cartoon show "Lots of Things Like This", curated by Dave Eggers, will also be illustrating examples of their work on a wall in the gallery space. So look for that if you'll be going to the opening 6 - 8 PM on April 2. Should be great fun, I'll be drawing some of my work with a giant black marker. Here is a link to the brochure for the show.

News - CM Evans Cartoons @ Apexart in NYC + McSweeney's

Big news! I've been invited by Dave Eggers to be a participant in a cartoon show at apexart in New York in April. The title of the show is "Lots of Things like This", and will feature 100 cartoons from blockbusting talents like Saul Steinberg, R. Crumb, William Steig, Ralph Steadman, Shel Silverstein, David Shrigley, Nedko Solakov...keerist the list goes on. There will even be work by Alasdair Gray, one of my favorite writers & illustrator. Topping it all off (if it could be topped off), McSweeney's will be publishing an edition that will be a companion to the show. My work will be in that publication too. I am frankly, totally amazed this is happening. Up to this point, I haven't been invited to be in anything, anywhere. If you love art, cartooning, or satire, you won't want to miss this installation. Opening is on April 2, from 6 - 8 PM. The show runs April 2 - May 10. If you make it out on April 2, I'll see you there!

Blasphemer Mouse is in Film

Super news! I just found out two friends of mine (Gary Cohen from Adobe, San Diego and Lidia Sheinen from St. Petersburg, Russia) just got first place in the experimental film category at the Rhode Island International Film Festival for their film short "Happily Ever After". It was their first attempt at film. Here is a link to an interview of Gary and Lidia, at the film festival.

Click on the "Play in Popup" link under "Lidia Sheinin and Gary Cohen - Happily Ever After [29:00m]" link to hear the interview -- and here is a tip -- at about 20 minutes into the interview you get to hear who created the logo for Scared Mouse Productions.

Click here to see the award winning short they made. Here is their blog.

Newsflash -- CM Evans Custom Postage Stamps @ CafePress

I created three custom postage stamps over at my store, The Refreshingly Obscure Online Mercado, at CafePress -- Phoebe Cat, Cosmic Swiss Cheese, and the BM "Tell it like it is". The designs come in books of 20 stamps, each. I like making these, so I plan on designing some more, using my daughter's artwork, and more of my cartoons.
