Cartoon - SJ Airport 7 AM

God I love airports. I love airports early in the morning, particularly if I have to get up before 5 AM so I can make it to a 7.45 AM flight, even though I stayed at a hotel less than a mile from the airport, because I have to go through security, and the airport says to give yourself at least 2 hours for security...but then it only takes 10 minutes to go through security, so you can sit and have a TV blast sports shit into one ear for over an two hours, while also listening to inane social-climbing business people on the other side trade business deal war stories, because the flight was delayed, with no coffee because all the shops are closed until 9 AM. Cartoon - How Do I Look

How do I look? Starting in college, because I was broke and clothes were not utilitarian enough for my activities, generally I wore the same thing every day for about 8 years -- an army mechanic's jumpsuit that was about 4 sizes too big. When buttons would fall off, I'd reattach them using paper clips, because paper clips were much more durable than thread. I'd stuff all of the pockets with books and pads of paper and pens so I looked like a hamster, and ride my bike up and down the hills of San Francisco having a fine time, sketching and writing stories and poems all the time. Everyone likes the smell of their own farts, I have been told. I tend to agree. I am sure I could dig up some ancient viking quote that attests to this. But we're mostly prudish nowadays about farts and other bathroom humor, which is sad indeed. Newsflash -- CM Evans Custom Postage Stamps @ CafePress

I created three custom postage stamps over at my store, The Refreshingly Obscure Online Mercado, at CafePress -- Phoebe Cat, Cosmic Swiss Cheese, and the BM "Tell it like it is". The designs come in books of 20 stamps, each. I like making these, so I plan on designing some more, using my daughter's artwork, and more of my cartoons.

Oversized. I saw a video on YouTube yesterday called "Gigantic Hail Storm" via Look at This that showed huge hail pummeling a group of nerdy storm chasers somewhere in the Midwest. Amusing at first, when the hail begins, the hailstorm turns relentlessly deadly. It smashed the shit out of their SUV, breaking the back window, a side window, and smashing the hell out of the font window of the vehicle. So I put this here cartoon up, even though it really has nothing to do with the deadly hailstorm. But watch out! Cartoon - Searching for Pie

I did this all the time when I first got my telescope. Pie in the Sky was one of the first things I wanted to see, after hearing about it all the time growing up when I'd talk to anybody in my family. The general gist was, whenever I was saying something important to me personally, I was told I was being hysterical, dramatic, ranting, unrealistic, irrelevant, over idealistic, i.e. "Pie in the Sky". Ya know, I didn't get discouraged by this lack of recognition, this refusal of insight....hey, it just goes to show you -- everybody likes pie!! Except the Devil. He likes angel food cake. Link Added - The Southern California Cartoonists Society

I swear I thought I already had a link to the Southern California Cartoonists Society, I've been a member of the SCCS for about 4 years now. Members of the SCCS include Jim Whiting (the founding member and original president), syndicated award winning cartoonist Greg Evans, and others of all ages. My daughter Phoebe, who is 8, is a member. She joined when she was 6. The SCCS meets once a month in downtown San Diego, and another time in the same month in north county San Diego. The SCCS even puts out a monthly newsletter, called "A Slice of Wry" with updated, cartoons, and news & whatnot. A great bunch of people, I've missed quite a few meetings lately, but I'm making it up by going as much as possible now. Hey, the SCCS even has a store, where you can buy shirts and stuff with their cute mascot. And be sure to check out the SCCS links page too.

Cartoon - Outside the Cafe

This one is actually pretty funny, it reminds me of growing up in Santa Rosa in the 1980s, and how some people automatically hated you because you bothered to drink coffee while hanging out in a cafe. You see, where I grew up, the concept of cafe life -- sitting around smoking, reading books, magazines, or newspapers while having a cup of joe at the coffee house, was for fags. Just wanted to let you all know, I've updated my links on the blog and I've also created a new separate blog called "The Forbidden Books". This new blog I will be updating with examples from a series of works I did, the first being titled, "What We Talk About As We Fall Asleep At Night." I've been wanting to post some of this media stuff like this for a few years, but never got around to it. Besides being darkly satirical, these works can also be screamingly funny. Cartoon - Repetitive Stress

This was me about 10 years ago, both wrists and upper arms, totally wrecked. I was working 12 - 18 hours a day, 5 - 6 days a week, my only indulgence was insisting on taking Sunday off. We worked so much we got high off the time. We were developing a telephony product, the project was in the weeds. People would jump on airplanes in the middle of the night and ping pong around the country to our component suppliers to put out fires, we'd buy CPUs airline seats to get the equipment to us as fast as possible, Directors, VPs, and entire departments fought bloody turf battles, and a few people went to the madhouse. "Nobody gets rewarded for failure.", said the project manager, quite grimly. The project never shipped. I was temporarily disabled. While I was on work comp, they terminated my contract. It was one of the best things that ever happened to me. CM Evans Cartoons

Call it what it is, that is what I say. Interesting side-bar -- there really was a guy named "Crapper" -- Thomas Crapper, and no, he did not invent the flush toilet, and no, he was never knighted. "Crap" was in use long before Thomas got into the plumbing and toilet business. I found out Sir John Harrington invented the flush toilet back in 1596. 1596! Wow! Ahhhh...the sweet days of my upper education. Going to a school with a fine Journalism and Creative Writing Department, on a campus with far far too much gray pebbly concrete. The buildings, stairs, walkways, walls, benches, even drinking fountains were all molded out of that same horrible institutional colored stuff, the architects trying, I suppose, to make it chic and avant-garde by throwing in tons of smooth black pebbles. But those were the days before every class and every department was hopelessly impacted. Is it Thursday again? Already? I had a dream last night that I was on a trip and we had to transfer at some airport in the Midwest. When we disembarked from the plane, I was told by the airline my connecting flight was canceled. After spending the night in a strange hotel, the airline said they could fly me the rest of the way, but the ticket was going to cost $100,000.00. Otherwise I could stay stranded in the Midwest, at that tiny airport forever. Comic News - Grinding on at the Daily Grind

The Daily Grind - Iron Man Challenge continues....grinding on and on and on. Talk about fortitude! I wonder when it will end? I give it at least one more year. Even two. Look At This & Bottle Houses Galore

Look At This, a pointer blog that I visit every day, has an entry showing a bottle house, looks like in Russia. I've seen two bottle houses in my travels -- one is located in the ghost town of Rhyolite, in Nevada. The other one is in, of all places, Knott's Berry Farm Amusement Park, in Buena Park, CA. See the picture above -- I got it from a funny Swedish website that has information and pictures of the park. As for the house in Rhyolite (still standing, with a new roof), it was built by Tom Kelly in about 1906. Here is a website with info, history and pictures of the "Tom Kelly Bottle House". I hear that it was well used, several generations of kids were raised there. It also has an interesting rock garden/ cement sculpture garden of miniature houses & buildings. While we are at it, here is a website that has links to a whole bunch of bottle houses all over the United States, including what it claims to be the first bottle house, built in Tonopah, Nevada in 1902.

More info on the ghost town of Rhyolite, here. A place worth visiting, if you get out there --plus Death Valley is about an hour away, a must see, too.

Lastly, on a side note: Knott's Berry Farm also has a smallish barrel house, next to Boot Hill. But amazingly, I can't find any good pics of this.
